In my last two years there the whole community was bulldozed by the city council - everything except the church, which felt quit ironic.
Maybe its only going to be through a re-engagement with a costly living out of the beatitudes that we can recover (or even capture for the first time? ) a way of living faith that can steer a course with courage through the challenges and complexities you present so clearly.

Dear Mark, two texts that cometo mind reading this for the second time. Both are from Alasdair Macintyre's "After Virtue. Indeed the whole book is exteadinary but I particularly have in mind the opening chapter "A Disquiting Suggestion" where he makes the case that moral discourse is very much in the desperate state as you suggest is the case with much in post Christian Christianity. The other is the very last sentence of the book where - to the horror and surprise of many of his colleagues he suggests that what we are waiting for is not Godot, but another doubtless very different St Benedict.
Thanks. Yes, I know Macintyre's work well. He, of course, greatly regretted writing that final line! A few years ago, I wrote a piece saying that what we need isn't so much a another St Benedict, but another St Augustine who was accustomed to speaking from within the forum.
The situation is even more terrible: the official church has become the main missionary institution of cultural Marxism! A church does not grow from the sweat of traitors, only from the blood of martyrs.
Is it possible that post-Christian Christianity was established by the time of Augustine? What you have since patristic times is a shell of "creed, cult and code" (to quote Carl Trueman) that institutionalises what should be a dynamic expression of rightousness, joy and peace in the Holy Spirit.
Trump is evidently not a christian and does not claim to be. What about the pope? The pope is a custodian of a version of post-Christian creed-cult-code that misrepresents the Lord Jesus Christ on a grand scale. Other misrepresentations are available.
I suspect you and I have a very different assessment of institutions, though I readily admit that in its current form here in the UK one has search hard for "dynamic expressions of righteousness, joy and peace in the Holy Spirit."

Dear Mark, two texts that cometo mind reading this for the second time. Both are from Alasdair Macintyre's "After Virtue. Indeed the whole book is exteadinary but I particularly have in mind the opening chapter "A Disquiting Suggestion" where he makes the case that moral discourse is very much in the desperate state as you suggest is the case with much in post Christian Christianity. The other is the very last sentence of the book where - to the horror and surprise of many of his colleagues he suggests that what we are waiting for is not Godot, but another doubtless very different St Benedict.
Thanks. Yes, I know Macintyre's work well. He, of course, greatly regretted writing that final line! A few years ago, I wrote a piece saying that what we need isn't so much a another St Benedict, but another St Augustine who was accustomed to speaking from within the forum.
The situation is even more terrible: the official church has become the main missionary institution of cultural Marxism! A church does not grow from the sweat of traitors, only from the blood of martyrs.
Is it possible that post-Christian Christianity was established by the time of Augustine? What you have since patristic times is a shell of "creed, cult and code" (to quote Carl Trueman) that institutionalises what should be a dynamic expression of rightousness, joy and peace in the Holy Spirit.
